When my son started school, I decided to get in shape. I thought training for a marathon was a great way to get fit.
I hired a coach and listened to the mainstream endurance “experts”. I ate the typical high carbohydrate diet typically recommended for endurance athletes.
I felt like I was on the right track.
Unfortunately, the recommended high carbohydrate diet didn’t work for me. In fact, it seemed to do just the opposite for me.
Instead of getting thinner and faster, I became slower, fatter and injured.
If I was doing “all the right things” why wasn’t I seeing results?
A pivotal point for me is when I read the book The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance by Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek.
I realized that almost everything I have learned or been told about nutrition and training was wrong, or at least wrong for me.
At my darkest moments, I thought I would never be able to race again.
Then, I started working with Peter Defty, the expert mentioned in the book. I learned about the Optimized Fat Metabolism (OFM) program for fat adaptation.
I was finally able to get the result I desired!
I now have personal records at races that I did 10 years ago.
I've become a Level 2 USA Cycling Coach and a USA Triathlon Coach to help endurance athletes just like me.
Coach Stephanie specializes in the Optimized Fat Metabolism (OFM) program. She uses the latest science in a low carbohydrate/ketogenic diets, fat adaptation, to optimize an athlete’s health and performance.
